Warning: The safest way to charge your batteries is outside. The information below outlines a solution that makes indoor charging safer, but not completely bullet proof.
If you are looking for an inexpensive solution to charging your batteries more safely, here is some info on setting that up!
Our friend Bill from the Charlotte (CAM) Club shared some information about how he built his $40 bunker.
Basically, this setup allows you to more safely charge and store your batteries. These are the supplies that are needed:
- Cinder Blocks
- Large freezer bags
The concept of this solution is that if a battery were to catch fire, a plastic bag filled with sand that sits on top of the access hole will melt, pouring sand on top of the battery that is on fire.
Cinder blocks are first placed on their side (holes parallel to the floor) on the bottom-most layer. The next layer of cinder blocks will be placed upright (holes perpendicular to the floor). The 2nd layer is the "bays" for batteries, and the first layer becomes the "floor" of each bay. Fill the freezer bags with sand, and place them on top of the bays with stored packs, or charging packs.
You can put as many packs in each bay as you feel comfortable with based on size, capacity, etc.
